Music Recording and Converting
LP Records, Cassettes, Reel to Reel
and MIDI to Compact Disks
In the past few years, after evaluating what is involved in using a
computer for music recording and converting of LP's, cassettes, reel to reel tapes
of music or midi files to compact disks, that I have never found a CD for in any music
store, I decided to search the internet to find if there is software or a procedure to
simplify the process. Guess what, there are several ways to do this.
Although there are numerous ways to accomplish this task and it does require time and
effort, it can be done. Assuming your LP's or tapes are still in decent shape and do not
have alot of scratches and they are not warped or brittle, there are companies that have
software or a hardware gadget to do this and it all seems to be very reasonably
priced.
Prior to purchasing any music recording or converting software, evaluate the
condition of your records and tapes. If they are not in very good condition, then you
might be wasting both time and money. If everything seems okay, it is advisable to clean
the heads on your cassette deck or reel to reel and have something to clean the records
before trying to record from them.
But even cleaning them will not remove the scratches. Your converted songs will only
sound as good as the original. Now you are probably wondering, what are these pieces
software called and where can you them.
For music converting from lp's, cassettes or reel to reel tapes to digital
format, the company is
Polderbits Software
For music converting from midi files to digital format the company is
Digital Audio Restoration Technology
For creating and recording music if you have a digital piano (MIDI), the
company is
PG Music Band-in-a-Box
For creating and recording music if you have a digital piano (MIDI), the
company is
GVOX Master Tracks Pro
For burning your CD's, the company is
Poikosoft Easy CD-DA Extractor
These are all personal choices and yes, I did purchase each of them and recommend
each for a specific task. It is a time consuming process and don't be discouraged if
after you convert a song or songs from one of your LP's or tapes, that it does not sound
very good. Try combinations of using the various filters and equalization to see what
works best. But if your records or tapes are not in very good condition, it might just be
a waste of time.
Music has succesfully been converted from several reel to reel tapes, that were 30-35 years old, to CD and the results were excellent.
